Winter Term saw students undertake a 6-week, 6cpt internship program – with ten students heading to Malaysia and four to Thailand. The students were all recipients of the New Colombo Mobility Grants, an initiative of the Australian Government to lift knowledge of the Indo Pacific in Australia. UC was successful in securing multi-year funding for Malaysia and single-year funding for Thailand. The program supports students to be competitive in the employment market, whilst providing the opportunity to build networks and develop firsthand experience within the Indo-Pacific region.

This is the first time UC had students across all faculties take part in an overseas internship. Placed in positions relating to their field of study, students had the opportunity to apply skills from their degree in a workplace environment. In order to prepare, students attended pre-departure sessions and employability skills workshops here on campus. Whilst in country, our University partners delivered cultural training and language sessions prior to the internships commencing. Over the 6-week period the interns participated in cultural activities including cooking classes, visits to historic sites and an array of professional networking events.

Students were placed in a mixture of global organisations such as: Linfox, Bumrungrad International Hospital and AustCham in Bangkok, and in Malaysia; Ri-Yaz Hotels and Resorts, Suaram (human rights NGO) and Kass International (IP firm). Careers UC travelled to Thailand and Malaysia to visit the students and their employers to ensure the roles undertaken were aligned to the students learning outcomes in accordance to academic units. Whilst there, the development of employer and university partnerships for future programs were established.
