Last Thursday (15 December) marked a major milestone for the construction of the University of Canberra Public Hospital, with the Topping Out Ceremony when the last batch of concrete was poured on the building’s final slab. ACT Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris was the guest of honour. She was joined by the representatives from ACT Health, the University of Canberra and Multiplex, along with members of the construction team that includes a number of our own students. Read more about the hospital here.

The construction of this hospital is a game-changer of an event in the ongoing rapid evolution of the University of Canberra. Located in the north-western corner of the campus, the 140- inpatient bed and 75-day bed hospital is a partnership between ACT Health (ACT Government) and the University of Canberra. The 35,000 m2 (350,000 ft2) structure, being constructed at a cost of $212 million by Multiplex, will open its doors in 2018. The hospital will be a sub-acute care facility that will provide rehabilitation and support for people with illness and injury or during recovery from surgery. In addition, it will offer mental health rehabilitation services. This anchor facility in the University’s fast-growing Health Precinct will join the University of Canberra Health Hub, which includes Canberra’s only GP Super Clinic, UC’s student-led clinics, a pharmacy and other health services. Working in close collaboration with the University’s Faculty of Health and the Health Research Institute, the University of Canberra Public Hospital will provide high-quality clinical placements for our students and offer research opportunities for UC researchers and students.

Additional developments being planned/considered for the Health Precinct include an aged care facility, radiation oncology clinic, and diagnostics, imaging and pathology services – all with embedded education, training, research and paid employment opportunities for UC students.

Even before its opening, the hospital is providing experiential learning opportunities for some of our Bachelor of Building and Construction Management students, several of whom are working as cadets on the site.
